The condition monitoring of medium voltage switchgears provides round-the-clock information on the health of the monitored equipment, therefore it is essential to increase the reliability of the power grid to guarantee the best services to the community.

The energy demand in high density populated areas is very high and constantly increasing, it is essential and cannot be stopped. Medium Voltage Switchgears represent one of the most vulnerable links in power grid. These type of electrical equipment in operating conditions are subject to overheating due to overload, corrosion, loose connections, and challenging environmental conditions. If neglected, these conditions can lead to switchgear failures, resulting in costly damage to the main asset and surrounding equipment, power production loss, and in extreme cases, severe injury or death.
Implementing continuous monitoring gives electric utilities the ability to collect data generated during the switchgear’s normal operating conditions, thereby providing awareness to problems in real time.

The causes of switchgear failure can be classified in:

  1. Thermal breakdown: caused by loose connections, improper racking, or a high current load
  2. Loss of insulation: caused by age, environmental conditions, or defects in the insulating material
  3. Air dielectric breakdown: caused by excess humidity and moisture, which can lead to the onset of corona and discharges between the high voltage terminal and ground.

IntelliSAW low voltage temperature sensors provide monitoring data based on physical contact with live (powered) potential hot spots while still ensuring electrical isolation through the use of embedded Integrated Near-Field Coupling (iNFC) wireless technology.
iNFC allows for a high density of sensors in a single asset, ensuring all desired points can be monitored. CC-E sensors are optimized for 3-phase molded case circuit breakers and contain three distinct temperature sensors, one for each cable termination.

CC-TC and CC-WC sensors are designed to monitor a single point by clipping directly onto a busbar, and they can be daisy-chained to monitor multiple hard-to-reach locations.

IntelliSAW's low-profile (LP) sensors have all of the benefits of the IntelliSAW SAW (IS) sensors, with slightly differnet dimensions to accomodate differnet installation requirements.

In some installations, having a low-profile sensor allows for installation of sensors where taller bolt-mounted IS sensor would not have the propper clearance. This low-profile sensor allows for unique istallations, such as installation directly onto a circuit breaker arm.

The IntelliSAW temperature sensors  are the ideal method for real-time, continuous monitoring of medium or low voltage critical asset hot-spots such as bus bars, breaker contacts, and cables.

Surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology enables a 100% wireless, passive (no power required) continuous temperature monitoring sensor. The SAW sensors were specifically designed for electrical power assets with basic insulation levels (BIL) up to 185kV.
